Oborevwori Pushes Inclusive Governance as Key to Nigeria’s Unity, Backs Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for the adoption of inclusive governance across Nigeria, describing it as the most viable path to national unity and sustainable development.
Speaking at the annual lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Lagos, the governor said Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and cultural composition requires a governance system that guarantees fairness, representation, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
Why Inclusive Governance Matters in Nigeria
Delivering a lecture titled “Inclusive Governance and National Unity: Lessons from Delta State for a More United Nigeria,” Oborevwori stressed that marginalization remains a major threat to national cohesion.
According to him, governments at all levels must deliberately include underrepresented groups in decision-making and development processes.
He noted that Delta State has adopted a governance framework anchored on the MORE Agenda—Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
How Delta State Is Applying Inclusive Policies
The governor highlighted key achievements under his administration, including:
Over 2.7 million residents enrolled in the state health insurance scheme
Strategic infrastructure projects like Effurun-Warri flyovers
Expansion of rural road networks to boost economic integration
Balanced investments across the three senatorial districts
Oborevwori also revealed that more than 300,000 people have benefited from youth empowerment programmes focused on skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
He added that social protection initiatives, such as the Widows Welfare Scheme, are designed to support vulnerable groups and ensure no segment of society is left behind.
Oborevwori Backs Tinubu’s Economic Decisions
On national economic policies, the Delta governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing bold reforms.
He specifically referenced the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, describing them as necessary steps for long-term economic recovery.
Oborevwori argued that increased revenue allocation to states has strengthened subnational governments, enabling them to execute impactful development projects.
Call for National Identity and Unity
The governor urged stakeholders to promote Nigeria’s diversity as a strength rather than a source of division.
He recommended:
Stronger use of education and media to foster unity
Youth-focused programmes to build national consciousness
A 10-year national conference involving key stakeholders to assess progress on inclusivity
He emphasized that true national unity must begin at the grassroots through inclusive governance at state and local levels.
Reactions from Lagos Leaders
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, described the Yoruba Tennis Club’s centenary milestone as a remarkable achievement, noting its century-long relevance.
He commended Oborevwori’s developmental strides and welcomed participants to the high-level discussion.
Similarly, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, praised the organizers and thanked the Delta governor for honoring the invitation.
Chairman of the club, Olawunmi Gasper, expressed pride in the institution’s legacy as it approaches its 100-year anniversary.
