The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary action following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has been condemned by the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, who described the act as a violation of police rules and operational procedures.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on credible intelligence from members of the public concerning the deceased, who was reportedly intercepted while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
However, while taking the suspect into custody, the team leader, ASP Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in contravention of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police ordered the immediate arrest of the officer. He was initially transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being moved to Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.
The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, respect for human rights, and professionalism, stressing that it maintains zero tolerance for extra-judicial killings and misconduct.
CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary process continues.
