Governor of Delta State, , has called for a united front against terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, and other security threats, declaring that safeguarding lives and property is a collective responsibility that must involve every segment of society.

The governor made the call on Wednesday while delivering his keynote address at the 2026 Delta State Security Summit held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, with the theme, “Security: A Collective Responsibility.”

The summit attracted top security chiefs, traditional rulers, local government chairmen, community leaders, civil society groups, youth and women organizations, and members of the business community who gathered to discuss strategies for strengthening peace and security across Delta State.

Security Key to Development, Says Oborevwori

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that security remains the bedrock of economic growth and sustainable development, warning that no society can thrive amid fear, violence, and instability.

“Security remains the foundation of every prosperous society. Without peace and stability, economic growth slows, investments decline, and communities struggle to thrive,” the governor stated.

He stressed that while security agencies have constitutional mandates to maintain law and order, achieving lasting peace requires collaboration among government institutions, traditional rulers, religious organizations, businesses, civil society groups, and citizens.

Delta Strengthens Security Architecture

Highlighting efforts by his administration to improve security across the state, Oborevwori disclosed that the government has continued to invest heavily in security operations, logistics, and partnerships with security agencies.

He revealed that the state’s joint security outfit, Operation Delta Sweep, has been restructured and strengthened, leading to notable successes in combating criminal activities.

The governor also announced that the Delta State Executive Council had approved the construction of divisional police headquarters in all 25 local government areas as part of preparations for the eventual takeoff of state policing.

According to him, the establishment of the Delta State Security Trust Fund will further deepen collaboration between government and the private sector in supporting security operations.

“We are in the process of procuring additional operational vehicles and security equipment while continuing to train and retrain security personnel to improve our capabilities,” he said.

Governor Urges Residents to Share Intelligence

The governor called on residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities.

“If you don’t share information, security agencies are not magicians. They operate based on intelligence. Criminals thrive when communities remain silent and stakeholders work in isolation,” Oborevwori said.

He further reiterated Delta State’s opposition to terrorism and violent extremism, pledging continued support for efforts aimed at ensuring national security.

“Delta State condemns every act of terrorism recorded in any part of our country. We will continue to unite against terror until our nation is fully safe and secure for all citizens,” he added.

He also observed that incidents of kidnapping and violent crimes have reduced significantly due to improved collaboration among communities, security agencies, and government institutions.

Delta Police Commissioner Advocates Whole-of-Society Approach

Delivering the keynote lecture, emphasized that contemporary security challenges require a whole-of-society approach.

The police commissioner identified kidnapping, cybercrime, cultism, pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, drug trafficking, and communal conflicts as major threats facing Nigeria.
