The Delta State Government has ordered a thorough investigation into the political violence that erupted in Asaba on Saturday, leaving one person dead and four others seriously injured.

The government condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and warning political parties against activities capable of endangering lives and disrupting public peace.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, stated this in a statement, reaffirming the government’s zero tolerance for political violence, intimidation and political attacks.

Aniagwu said the incident could have been avoided, noting that the police had earlier advised the organisers to suspend the proposed street march and hold their campaign at a designated venue with adequate security.

He regretted that the security advice was ignored, resulting in a confrontation that claimed a life and left four people seriously injured.

The government called on the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence and ensure that those found responsible are prosecuted.

Aniagwu further warned that politically motivated attacks against individuals would not be tolerated, regardless of their political affiliation.

He urged political parties, their leaders and supporters to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law and conduct their political activities peacefully, stressing that the government would not allow political disagreements to threaten the safety of residents and visitors in Delta State.
