Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has flagged off the ₦29.8 billion Aboh–Akarai Road and Bridge project in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, in a move set to transform transportation and economic activities in riverine communities.

The 11-kilometre road project will link Aboh through Umuti to Akarai-Obodo and Akarai-Etiti, providing a long-awaited alternative to river transport for residents who have faced years of accessibility challenges.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure, ensuring that no community is left behind regardless of terrain or location.

Oborevwori explained that the road would be constructed using reinforced concrete pavement due to the swampy and flood-prone nature of the area. He added that the design includes culverts, drainage systems, and a 140-metre bridge across the Okiri River.

To prevent future disruptions, the road will be elevated above flood levels recorded during the 2012 Nigeria floods, ensuring durability and all-season access.

“This is not just a road project; it is a pathway to economic growth and improved quality of life,” the Governor said, noting that farmers, traders, students, and patients will benefit significantly from easier movement.

The contractor handling the project has already been mobilized with ₦11.9 billion—40 percent of the total cost—with a completion timeline of 12 months.

Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme described the project as historic, noting that some benefiting communities are getting tarred roads for the first time.

He also highlighted other ongoing road projects across Ndokwa Nation, including Emu-Ebendo to Ashaka and Ase to Umu-Ase, as part of a broader push to unlock economic potential in previously underserved areas.

Local leaders welcomed the development, expressing optimism that improved road access will boost commerce, create jobs, and enhance living standards.

The Governor also revealed that the next phase of infrastructure expansion will see the flag-off of the ₦32.8 billion Ojobo–Torugbene Road project in Burutu Local Government Area.

As construction begins, expectations are high that the Aboh–Akarai Road and Bridge will significantly improve connectivity and drive sustainable development across Delta State’s riverine corridor.
