Tinubu, Oborevwori Champion Police Professionalism As BIPOGA 2026 Opens With Colourful Ceremony In Asaba
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, have reaffirmed strong governmental and institutional support for the Nigeria Police Force as the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026) officially kicked off in Asaba, Delta State.
The event, themed “Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action,” attracted police athletes, security leaders, and dignitaries from across the federation, highlighting the role of sports in strengthening discipline, teamwork, and operational readiness within the Force.
Tinubu Emphasises Security As Foundation For National Development
President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), described the Police Games as a strategic platform for promoting professionalism and building a performance-driven police institution.
According to him, national security remains essential for economic growth, social stability, and investor confidence.
“Service is not defined merely by authority or uniform, but by character, competence and conduct,” the President said, stressing that sports play a vital role in developing mental resilience, unity, and institutional cohesion.
He added that a physically fit and morally grounded Police Force is indispensable to effective policing, urging participants to compete with fairness, discipline, and mutual respect.
Oborevwori Showcases Delta’s Sporting Strength And Improved Security
In his welcome address, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assured participants of a memorable sporting experience, noting that Delta State has built a strong reputation as a centre for major sporting events.
He cited previous events hosted in the state, including the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships in 2018, the National Sports Festival, and the National Youth Games in 2023.
The governor also highlighted improved security in Delta State, attributing the progress to collaboration among security agencies and praising the Nigeria Police Force for its professionalism.
He encouraged athletes to embrace excellence and teamwork, reminding them that dedication and effort define true success beyond medals.
Oborevwori further referenced the Nigeria Police Force’s legacy of producing elite athletes such as Olympic gold medallist Chioma Ajunwa, challenging participants to break new records and elevate Nigeria’s sporting image globally.
IGP Egbetokun: Police Games Boost Readiness And Unity
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun described the Biennial Police Games as a key initiative for strengthening unity, professionalism, and operational readiness within the Force.
He noted that modern policing demands endurance, agility, resilience, and strong character, adding that physical fitness enhances officer safety and effectiveness.
Commending Delta State’s hospitality, the IGP described Asaba as a hub of organisation and sporting excellence, highlighting collaboration between the Police Force and the state government in promoting youth development and national unity.
March-Past, Torch Lighting Mark Grand Opening
The opening ceremony featured a colourful march-past by contingents from the 17 Zonal Commands of the Nigeria Police Force and the Force Headquarters, Abuja. Other highlights included the symbolic lighting of the Games torch, athletes’ oath-taking, the arrival of the Games mascot, and the hoisting of the Games flag.
Top serving and retired police officers attended the ceremony, officially marking the commencement of the 15th Biennial Police Games in Asaba.
