FG Denies Alleged Plot to Target Opposition, “ADP4VIP” Document is Fake

The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed as false and misleading a circulating document alleging plans to arrest, detain, and prosecute opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by Mohammed Idris, fnipr, Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation on Tuesday, the government described the document purportedly outlining a multi-agency operation tagged “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons) as a complete fabrication designed to misinform the public and undermine democratic institutions.

According to the Statement, there is no such programme, nor is there any plan to unlawfully target members of the political opposition.

The document falsely claimed that a task force involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser, was set up to weaken opposition political activity, particularly within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Reacting to the claims, the Federal Government stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, remains focused on governance priorities, including economic reforms, tackling insecurity, expanding trade opportunities, and restoring investor confidence.

“The attempt by some opposition elements to frame lawful accountability as political persecution is a dangerous red herring,” the statement noted, adding that such narratives are aimed at shielding politically exposed individuals from answering to Nigeria’s laws.

The Minister reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, citing Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees Nigerians the right to freedom of association and political participation.

It emphasized that President Tinubu, having sworn to uphold the Constitution, remains committed to protecting civil liberties, democratic values, and institutional independence.

Under the current administration, the statement said, law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies are expected to carry out their duties professionally, lawfully, and without political interference.

The Federal Government also warned against the spread of disinformation and fake news, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

“With the elections on the horizon, Nigerians should expect an increase in fabricated narratives and political blackmail by actors who rely on falsehood for relevance,” the statement said, urging citizens to remain vigilant and reject divisive propaganda.

As 2025 draws to a close, the government stressed that it will not be distracted by what it described as “perpetual politicking,” reaffirming its commitment to delivering continuity, progress, and measurable results for Nigerians.
