Delta to Add 120MW to National Grid as Oborevwori Expands Power Generation for Industrial Growth

Delta State is set to inject an additional 120 megawatts (MW) into Nigeria’s national grid as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori intensifies effort to drive industrial growth through strategic power investments.

The state government stated the move is part of a long-term plan to attract investors, boost job creation, and position Delta as a leading industrial hub in Nigeria.

Why Power Generation Matters for Delta’s Economy
Speaking during a visit by the State Economic Management Team to Sapele Power Plc in Ogorode, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said energy remains the foundation of industrialisation.

“Energy is the bedrock of industrialisation. To attract industries and create jobs, we must expand our capacity in power generation and distribution,” Aniagwu stated.

The initiative aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda and follows recent constitutional amendments that give states greater authority over electricity generation and distribution.
From Idle Turbines to Revenue-Generating Assets
According to the state government, turbines and equipment previously stored in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, had remained unused for years.

Rather than sell the equipment as scrap for about ₦3 billion, the administration opted for a long-term investment strategy. After feasibility studies conducted with the Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA), the Ministry of Energy, and the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser, the state partnered with Sapele Power Plc to refurbish and integrate the turbines into the plant.

120MW Boost from Rolls-Royce Turbines
Sapele Power Plc currently generates over 1,020 megawatts of electricity. The ongoing refurbishment project will add 120 megawatts through the installation of two 60MW Rolls-Royce Trent 60 generating turbines.
When completed, the additional capacity will be injected into the national grid, strengthening power supply and supporting industrial expansion in Delta and beyond.

Aniagwu described the decision as “a wise and profitable investment” that prioritises sustainable revenue over short-term gains.

Jobs, Technology Transfer and Investment Opportunities
Beyond increasing electricity supply, the project is already creating employment opportunities for local engineers and technicians involved in fabrication and installation.
Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka, described the development as a major step toward meeting the energy needs of Deltans.

Chief Economic Adviser, Dr. Barry Gbe, added that the investment is a strategic response to Nigeria’s new electricity law, which allows greater state participation in the power sector.

He disclosed that Delta State has set up a committee to liberalise the electricity market, encourage private sector participation in generation and distribution, and ensure affordable electricity for businesses and residents.

Positioning Delta as an Industrial Hub
Chairman of DIDA, Chief Lucky Oghene-Omoru, said the project has transformed a dormant asset into a value-generating investment.

The Acting CEO of Sapele Power Plc, Mr. Valentine Ashinze, commended Governor Oborevwori’s foresight and pledged continued support for the state’s industrialisation agenda.

With infrastructure development, energy expansion, and investment promotion now closely aligned, Delta State is positioning itself as a sustainable industrial growth hub in Nigeria.
