Delta Govt Donates ₦10m to Support Cancer Treatment Initiative

The Delta State Government has donated ₦10 million to support “A Ride for Life,” a humanitarian cancer treatment advocacy initiative championed by Miss Chineyenwa Judith Amadi, aimed at raising funds for indigent cancer patients across Nigeria.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, described cancer as one of the most devastating health challenges of modern times, stressing that the donation followed a direct directive from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
“This donation represents our solidarity, our contribution, and our commitment to humanity,” Dr. Emu said, adding that the Oborevwori administration remains committed to supporting initiatives that alleviate human suffering.
He noted that the burden of cancer extends beyond patients to families, communities, and the healthcare system, emphasizing that every effort aimed at easing this burden deserves strong backing.
Dr. Emu further disclosed that the Delta State Government is taking steps to establish a cancer treatment facility within the state, to enable residents access quality care without the hardship of travelling long distances.
Commending Miss Amadi for riding a motorcycle across 16 countries to raise awareness and funds, the SSG said the government’s investment in healthcare reflects its resolve to save lives.
“This is not just goodwill. It is about providing information, guidance, and support that will help initiatives like this make real impact,” he added.
Speaking at the event held at the SSG’s Conference Hall in Asaba, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, stressed that prevention and early detection remain the most effective tools in the fight against cancer.
He explained that early intervention can significantly reduce cases of cervical cancer, while breast cancer, when detected early, is highly manageable.
“Regular hospital visits, routine medical check-ups, and timely breast examinations can save lives,” Dr. Onojaeme said.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to healthcare development, revealing that Delta State has state-of-the-art MRI facilities across its three senatorial districts, ranking among the best available.
“These are critical, life-saving investments that underscore our resolve to build a strong and responsive healthcare system,” he stated.
In her remarks, an emotional Miss Amadi thanked the Delta State Government for the support, explaining that A Ride for Life was inspired by her personal experiences with cancer.
“I have lost loved ones to cancer, I have survivors in my family, and I am currently close to someone battling the disease. That personal journey inspired this project,” she said.
She recalled how she began personally funding chemotherapy for a cancer patient in early 2025, only to discover that many patients abandon treatment due to lack of funds.
“They are not lacking courage; they are lacking support. That is why I invested my personal resources into A Ride for Life to raise funds and remind cancer patients that they are not alone,” she added.
The event was attended by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu; the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Festus Ahon; and other top government officials.
