The Delta State Government has reassured workers and residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, stressing that security remains the foundation of effective governance.

The assurance was given on Wednesday at Government House, Asaba, by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, while receiving members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, who embarked on a peaceful protest as part of a nationwide demonstration against rising insecurity in the country.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Erijo acknowledged the concerns raised by the workers, emphasizing that “the primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” adding that no responsible administration would be indifferent to the safety of its people.

While noting that Delta State remains relatively peaceful, he described the protest as an expression of solidarity with other parts of the country facing serious security challenges.

The Chief of Staff stated that the Federal Government is fully aware of the gravity of the situation, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited some of the security challenges currently confronting the nation, while also making concerted efforts to address them.

“We recognize the steps being taken by the Federal Government to confront the disturbing security challenges in parts of the country,” he said.

Erijo reiterated Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to peace and security, stressing that it remains a core pillar of the administration’s MORE Agenda.

According to him, “without peace and security, the delivery of democratic dividends would be impossible.” He assured the protesters that their message had been received and would be conveyed to the appropriate authorities, including the President.

Commending the NLC for its orderly and peaceful conduct, Erijo praised the maturity displayed by the workers and assured them that proactive measures would continue to be taken to strengthen security across the state and the nation.

Earlier, the Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Acrobat Enekhawore, decried the worsening security situation, describing how it has disrupted daily life and undermined public confidence nationwide.

The protest, part of a nationwide NLC action, ended with a call for stronger collaboration between state and federal governments to restore security, protect schools and workplaces, safeguard homes, and secure the future of the country.
