After more than a decade and a half of neglect, residents of Delta’s riverine communities are finally celebrating the delivery of a critical road project long seen as a lifeline.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday commissioned the 31-kilometre Ohoror–Bomadi Road, bringing to reality a project many locals had waited over 16 years to see completed.

The road links key areas including Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Burutu and Bomadi, opening up previously hard-to-reach communities and easing years of transportation hardship.

Describing the project as a turning point, Oborevwori said his administration is determined to change the story of neglected riverine areas through deliberate, people-focused development.

“For years, our people here faced serious challenges due to poor access. Today, that narrative has changed. This road is not just infrastructure, it is a pathway to economic revival and social inclusion,” he said.

For residents, the project is more than a road, it is long-awaited relief. The newly completed corridor is expected to drastically cut travel time, reduce transport costs, improve safety and unlock economic opportunities across the benefiting communities.

The governor noted that the project was executed with specialised engineering suited for swampy terrain, including sand filling, soil stabilisation and reinforced construction to ensure durability.

Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Area, Hon. Dagidi Andaye, described the development as “historic,” stressing that the area had not witnessed such a major intervention in over 16 years.

Community leaders, including Nicholas Mutu and James Manager, praised the governor for responding to the long-standing needs of the people, noting that the road would revive local economies and improve livelihoods.

The commissioning drew large crowds of jubilant residents, many of whom expressed gratitude for what they described as a long-overdue project that has finally brought hope and connectivity to their communities.
